Fill: Challenge #151 (DW AU)

I'm still working on this new story of mine, so this snippet is from that. Still bowling. I've changed the references to the female character in this to "she" because I don't want to reveal who that character is until I finish and post the story, but it's not Donna.

“No, no, first things first.” She gestured at the lane. “You’re not to step past that line there, so you’ve got to get a feel for how much room you’ve got.” She trotted past her fiance, who shrugged and went to join Donna in the seats, and walked an approach, swinging her arm to mime a throw. She twirled back to Jon, grinning at how easy it was. “See? Now you try. Come on up.”

As Jon dutifully paced the approach whilst bowlers on either side of him took their turns, Donna and Dave grinned at each other, both aware how mortified he must feel. After he took a dry run, she called him back.

“Brilliant. Now, throw a couple of balls, just to see how it feels. It’ll be your first frame, but never mind the pins. Just throw the ball without going over the line or tripping. Dry your hand first. There’s chalk here and air over here.” She demonstrated drying her hand in the airstream and applying chalk, with Jon mimicking her.

“Okay,” Jon repeated as he positioned himself at the beginning of the approach and held his green ball before him, then started forward. He swung the ball as he walked forward unsteadily, and when he let go, his foot two inches before the line, it flew forward and landed with a great thunk! down the lane. It rolled straight for the head pin, then curved into the left gutter. He threw up his hands, laughing. “Perfect!”

She clapped. “It was, though you don’t think so, do you? Most people go over the line the first time, and some even fall into the lane. I’ve seen people throw the ball into the next lane. Yours was loads better.”

“That’s good to hear.”

“Now, you’ve got your second shot, so look here. Bend at your knees and lay the ball down on the lane, not throw it out way up there. Like this.” She knelt, one foot forward and one foot back, and swept her arm down so that her hand mimed rolling the ball just at floor level. “See? Remember, never mind the pins.”
