Just had to look up the latter. That’s… either not a word I’ve heard or not a common one

It's relatively common. You probably wouldn't use it every day, but it's in common circulation. One phrasing that pops up a lot is "testing their mettle", which means to challenge someone in order to see how much perserverance they have.
