Fill: Challenge #108 (Orig)
Probably not exactly what the challenge was asking for, but this is what came to mind.
“Isaac did warn me.”
“I hope he also told you that I am keeping an open mind, Mr Parsons.”
“He told me that you pride yourself on your objectivity.”
“I do, but it’s not going to be easy for me, when I know everything about me and my life has to change.”
“It doesn’t have to.”
“I think it does, but that’s for another day. Alex?”
Kit turned to beckon him into the manor house and found him staring down across the lawn and past the pond into the thick wood, his eyes wide and bright and his fingers twitching. On hearing his name, he spun and nodded to her. “Lady?”
“We’re going inside to see the place.”
“Of course.” He stepped to her side, perfectly composed, but a slight drop in his shoulders belied his disappointment.
“Mr Parsons,” she blurted, “can Alex take a run in the wood? He’s been in London all this time and -”
“Certainly. Just be sure to stay within the fence.” He gestured upwards. “You can fly, too, as long as you stay low. Can’t have you above the illusion spell.”
Alex bounced on his toes and sucked in a breath to reply, then settled himself again. “No, thank you. I’m to stay with my lady.”
“No one here will hurt me,” Kit chided. “Isn’t that right, Mr Parsons?”
“The grounds are perfectly safe.”
At Alex’s hesitation, Kit patted him on the shoulder. “Go on. Enjoy yourself.”
He flashed her a shining, silly, toothy grin. Dashing off, he kicked off each shoe then divested himself of the rest of his clothing as he ran. As soon as he’d tossed the last bit of cloth aside, he leapt and shifted in midair. He wasn’t high or fast enough to take to the air, but a great downsweep of muscled wings propelled him forward and in a moment, he’d sped across the lawn and disappeared amongst the trees.
“He’s needed that,” Kit commented as she continued to gaze over the property. “He hasn’t complained, but I don’t think the city really suits him.” Glancing over, she noticed Mr Parson staring after him as well, one eyebrow cocked in confusion. “What’s wrong?”
“Odd one, he is.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’ve never seen keror get excited about anything. Level-headed, stoic, that’s what anyone would say about them. I’m not even sure I’ve seen one smile.”
“You have now, I guess.”
“I suppose so. Come along now.”
