Fill: Challenge #17 (Doctor Who AU)

Not quite the Doctor and companion; my OCs David and Will.

If he had to guess, Will would have said the creature was the love child of a stag beetle and nudibranch, with a shiny carapace and sharp pincers protecting the front end of a slimy neon-green mollusc. His stomach roiled as he peered at it, clamped in the teeth of the giffra, the most common eating utensil here on Jilreth. “And I’m supposed to eat this thing.”

David looked about as green as Will felt as he regarded his own meal of crunchy worms in white sauce. “This is equivalent to their fish and chips, almost the most common dish served anywhere. They say it’s best with the shells on, for both taste and texture.” He poked at the lumps with his giffra. “I have to admit, I’ve never liked fish and chips. Or fish anything.”

Will frowned at his friend. “You ate fish and chips all the time, back in England.”

Shaking his head, David continued to inspect his meal, trying to convince himself it was just a strange form of pasta. “Back when I was human. Hated fish then.”

Will looked around the restaurant at the indigenous bear-like customers enthusiastically downing this and other strange food. “I’m not sure our teeth are cut out for this kind of cuisine,” he replied, setting down the attempted mouthful and pushing the plate away.

“You can just suck out the insides,” suggested David. “The culture guidebook said that’s acceptable.”

Will shook his head, taking care not to allow himself another glimpse of the food. “You go on, mate. I’ll watch.”

David nodded. “All right.” Pulling a face, he picked up Will’s giffra then steeled himself as he bit the tail and pulled a large chunk out of the shell. He chewed for a bit and swallowed, and lay the rest back on Will’s plate. “It’s not bad, actually. The texture I could do without, but otherwise it tastes pretty good, and the sauce really helps. You should give it a go.”

“Oh, no,” Will purred with an incredulous smile. “I don’t trust you one bit, mate. You’re just trying to get me to spit something up.”

"No, actually, it's good." David pushed Will's plate toward him, then started on his own.

"I still don't believe you."

David shrugged as he chewed. "You okay with starving for the day?"

"Of course not." Will reached in his jacket pocket and pulled out an energy bar. He tore open the plastic and bit off a big chunk.

David grinned. "Always prepared, you are."

"Mate," Will shot back, a devious glint in his eye, "I'm travelling with you. I have to be prepared."

Nice! Hard to tell whether I'm impressed or ...actually grossed out by what they're eating. As someone who has weird food tastes and likes mixing stuff together, that couldn't sound less appetizing. Poor David and Will.

I haven't had authentic fish and chips but it has to be better than insects. :(

(when is Will's first appearance)
