Fill Challenge 27- WIP Original, Lemy'es

Hi! I figure a little introduction might be in order with my first post, so, I'm one of those LiveJournal interlopers and while I'm still posting both places I decided to poke at the writing prompt communities here and found this one. I like the low-key for-the-fun-of-it vibe you have going on and hope you don't mind me just popping in.

Most of my work centers around two "worlds" Lemy'es and Kashi'an, the former being where this little snippet hails from, which centers around a secret society known as the Brotherhood of the Meim consisting of people who can create and manipulate invisible objects (maybe someday I'll come up with a better name, but Mime/Meim amuses me to no end so there you have it).

This little snippet is a WIP from my novel-in-progress.

Silfiya lead the way into her quarters, Sray close behind. Silfiya DeTowr sat after closing the door, but Sray stayed standing.

"What did you wish to discuss that you don't want Kem hearing?" Silfiya asked as Sray lingered by the door.

"It isn't that I would mind her hearing," Sray started as she twisted her fingers around each other, a sure sign that too many things were rattling around in her head, "but my place here is tennuous as it is and I doubt the Brotherhood would want Kem knowing about their reach before she is inducted. I don't want her in trouble and I can hardly afford another mark against me."

Silfiya nodded understanding.

"It's about my file." Sray continued, "Mr. Mishor let me read it all and, well," she glanced at Silfiya and shook her hands before stuffing them into her elbows, "you saw him pull it out, it was not small. Silfiya, there was a lot in my file about my mother and the work she did during the peace negotiations. I guess it gives background as to how I came to be." She shrugged and tucked a bit of loose hair behind her ear. "My parents never talked much about it and, frankly, my siblings and I never asked, but the file mentioned two Human translators. I had always assumed it was just my mother, father, and aunt, but I guess that wasn't the case. I-" she stopped as she caught Silfiya's look, "this isn't new to you at all. You know who the other translator was, don't you?"

Silfiya let out a short, hard laugh that was full of irony. "I would hope so. It was me."

Sray stared at Silfiya and couldn't decide what to say at first. Just as she thought of something Silfiya beat her to it. "That is why I left Kamenlohn. Not everyone was happy with how the treaty played out. I was the only one available to blame for things not going exactly how they wanted. The Getier returned to Geteilpohth and your mother followed Teigan after she gave her father a bit of a run around to keep him out if their hair, so that just left me." Silfiya shrugged it off. "I'm proud of what we did, but having it as common knowledge made my life difficult in Kamenlohn."

"I can imagine that. But you didn't just meet my father, you really knew him, didn't you?" Sray stared at Silfiya like she was seeing her for the first time.

"I did." Silfiya confirmed. "I knew your aunt Rothan, too. I don't know if you would quite call us friends by the end of it all, they always trusted your mother's intentions more than mine, but I couldn't blame them for that."

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Sray asked.

Silfiya raised her brows and looked up at Sray over her glasses. "Do you think you would have believed me in those first weeks?"

Sray pulled in a breath, almost started to say something and then shook her head. "I don't know. Hearing Kamenan was enough of a shock, I don't know what I would have done had you spoken Getier."

The older woman smiled understandingly. "Exactly. You looked stressed enough as it was. I figured your mother would tell you when you got home. There's only so much that one feels safe putting in writing. Besides, my Getier is so rusty I don't know if you would have understood me anyway." She laughed at herself. "What else did you want to ask me about your file? That didn't have much to do about the Meim."

"Well, I guess the other part was about my grandfather." She started to pace. "You said at the beginning of term that there were things you couldn't tell me about what went on at Tayran before my family left Geteilpohth. I'm sure you already know my grandfather was involved with the Meim and had some rank. He wanted the Meim involved in the hunt for my mother. There was a lot about what he did in my file, actually. There were limits to what you could say before because I haven't been inducted yet and you assumed I didn't know of the Meim, but," Sray stopped and grimaced then shook her shoulders and moved on again. "But I have to ask, do you know if he was looking for us? I know he was looking for my mother, but do you know if he was looking forĀ us," she brought both hands to her chest for emphasis, stopping in front of Silfiya, "my siblings and I?"

Silfiya's expression fell, there was a great sadness in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Sray, I left before you were even born. I don't know."

"You don't think he knew where she was before you left Kamenlohn?"

"I did what I could to make sure he didn't." Silfiya said, her dislike of Dayfid Hillenbohn evident in her voice. "If he knew before I left he would have caused trouble a whole lot sooner. That I know for sure."

Sray finally sat down and melted into the high-backed chair across from Silfya. Sray wiped her face and then propped her head on her hand, staring at the shut door. Life was so much simpler before the Meim came into it, but she was starting to believe they may have been there all along, weaving their influence through her life, even before she was born, before her parents met. Perhaps it had just been a matter of time before the Meim showed up and it was merely luck they didn't make their presence known sooner.

Happy to have questions, thoughts or suggestions. I'm looking forward to participating in the challenges to come and thanks for making this community!
