Fill: Challenge 33 WIP Original-Lemy'es

Continuing on the reunion bit from the past week. Over 1200 words!

Teigan casually glanced at the shelves of books that crowded Silfiya's quarters as he pulled off his outer layers and dropped them on the floor. As he pulled off the thin gloves he did a double take. He dropped the gloves and pulled one of the titles off the shelf.

"You still have it." He said as the book fell open in his hands, the pages so crammed with notes there was barely a speck of open paper. He looked from the book to Silfiya.

"I may have overexaggerated my lack of understanding when Mishor asked me what you and Sray were saying." She said casually. "If she chose to speak Getier it was because she didn't want others hearing."

"You still remember, then."

"I remember everything, Teigan. From our first meeting to the last." She sat and watched him thumb through the pages. She found herself cycling back to those distant years, comparing the man she knew then with the one standing before her now. Still strong and self-possessed, but there was something that wasn't there before. A tension that hovered just beneath his skin.

"I always knew there was something about you I didn't quite trust and couldn't put my finger on why." Teigan said without looking up. "You got yourself in pretty deep with the Meim, didn't you?"

Silfiya laughed. "You never were one to mince words. I nearly gave up on the Meim, actually. When my husband and son died I thought about leaving. I gave them so many years and it felt like they took everything."

"I'm sorry for your losses." Teigan closed the book. "I don't know what I would do without Kayrin, or if something happened to our children." He carefully slid it back into its place, slowly sliding his fingers down the spine as if reluctant to break the connection to their shared past.

"You suffered your own losses leaving Geteilpohth." She said. "I'm not sure I could have done the same. But that's why you're here, protecting your family, despite the danger to you. Sray gets that from you."

He grunted and turned away from the bookshelf. "What changed your mind about them?" He asked as he sat awkwardly in the chair across from her, looking uncomfortable despite the the cushioning.

"Danrick Mishor did."

"He is an," he considered his word choice, "unusual Human."

"You could not have chosen a better person to find you."

His lip twitched slightly and he narrowed his eyes at Silfiya. She waited for a response, but instead he got up and moved towards the bed.

"Teigan."

He paused and turned his head slightly.

"I'm glad you're not dead."

He scratched his ear and blew out a short breath, a portion of the tension he held leaving with it. "Thank you, Silfiya-for being here-for being there for Sray."

"It's been my pleasure. Rest well, it will be another long day tomorrow."

He climbed onto the bed and pulled the curtain shut without another word.

Sray woke up. It was still dark. She sat up and pulled her hair up. Her father was here. She changed clothes in the dark. He was here. Just a little more patience, just one more day and they would have had her letter. She couldn't help she was unconscious for three days and Mishor had sealed up everything, no one in, no one out except for Kenbin Mounthyuns making a mad dash to the seat of the Gordie'en and his Council. It wasn't fast enough, Teigan was here. Mishor kept everything closed until they knew who did it. Thankfully Dafid Dentill's guilt made him come clean about the whole plot as soon as he was confronted.

And her father was here. She went to the door. Everyone in the room was still sound asleep. She took a deep breath and opened it.

Jina and Johnus Pfyllat were on watch. Jina was fiddling with a bit of gold chain while her father sat heavily against the chair, making it look small. He looked at Sray when she stepped out. "Anything the matter?" He questioned.

"No," Sray said quickly, "I just need to speak with Mrs. DeTowr." The dance around who knows what begins again. If the Pfyllats had not seen Teigan she didn't need to add to the number.

He pulled a watch out and raised his brows at it. "It's almost five in the morning, you think she will be awake?"

"I don't know, but I don't want to wait." If Silfiya wasn't awake Teigan probably would be. What if he answered the door with Pfyllat there? She shook her head, she couldn't dwell on that.

"Did you want to go or not?" Johnus asked as he repocketed the watch.

"Yes, sorry, I'm just thinking too much." She stepped out from between the chairs.

"Do I stay here?" Jina asked, looking up from her work as Johnus stood.

"Yes," Johnus confirmed. "I'll be back."

"Thank you." Sray said and Jina nodded as she refocused on the bit of jewelry in her hands.

Johnus picked up a lamp and let Sray lead the way to the classroom and then the door to Silfiya DeTowr's quarters. She closed her eyes and held her breath as she knocked. The seconds ticked by and just as Sray thought to knock again the door clicked open.

"Sray, Johnus, is something the matter?"

Sray pressed her lips together. "I-I need to talk with you." She managed.

Silfiya nodded and looked past Sray. "I have her from here Johnus." The man nodded and left.

Sray tucked into the room. Silfiya sat herself in one of the chairs, already dressed for the day. Two lamps illuminated the space. Teigan was up as well, pulling on the gloves before he reached for the coat.

"How are you getting back?" Sray asked.

"Danrick Mishor thinks I should take their carriage relay." Teigan replied, his tone not agreeing with Mishor's suggestion as he pushed his arm through the sleeve.

"The relays are fast, but there's a lot of people between here and there." Sray said.

"Exactly." He shrugged the coat on and pulled the scarf out of the pocket. "I'd rather go the way Kalden and I came yesterday. The fewer people the better."

"Kayrin always kept her horses legged up, but I doubt it would do that trip twice in two days." Silfiya observed.

"She might." Teigan replied, "but Mishor said we could take two from the school and work out an exchange later." He pulled the hat down firmly on his head. "Kayrin might not like her being left here, but it's better if I can get on the road sooner. She'll forgive me."

"Is Kalden guiding you back, too?" Sray asked.

"He said he would, wants to get back home himself." He looked to Silfiya. "Do you know where he is?"

"Yes," Silfiya stood. "Are you ready?"

He tucked the scarf and settled it high over the bridge of his nose. "Ready enough."

"Do you want anything to eat before you go?" Sray questioned, a little more anxiety creeping into her voice.

"I packed enough, I can eat as we ride." He placed his hand on her cheek, a smile creased the corners of his eyes from under the scarf. "I will be fine, Sray." They pressed their foreheads together and Sray closed her eyes, willing the moment to last a little longer. "I made it here, I will make it back." He reassured her. "Focus on what you have to do here and we will be fine." He pulled back and Sray opened her eyes. "Lead the way, Silfiya."

Chugging right along filling gaps in the story.
