This is a slight switch on the actual ask. This is a third character watching the interactions between the first two and trying to read their signals.
David picked at the rice on the plate, moving it from pile to pile as he listened to their conversation and wondered if they even realised a third person sat at the table.
"Gorgeous view, that tower," Will was saying as he poured a bit more dressing over his chicken salad. "Could see the whole town and right up the valley. You're a great tour guide, love. Glad we ran into you."
Chanra smiled, her dark eyes sparkling at the compliment, and she leant across her forgotten fettucini to grasp Will's hand. "Oh, I know the perfect place to take you next. You'll love the historical museum. It's got exhibits on the journey here and how the colony was set up, but the best is a VR room touring this area how it looked before the colonists arrived. I used to go there as a girl to just sit in the middle and wander the whole valley for hours."
"Sounds brill," Will replied, curling his fingers around her hand and squeezing once before withdrawing his hand, "but David could do you one better on that." He glanced at his friend, whose shoulders twitched a nearly invisible shrug.
"What do you mean?" asked Chanra.
"Well," Will drawled, "best we stick to the walking tour for now. Maybe after. But we haven't seen the lakefront yet."
"No, we haven't. Parts of it are quite beautiful, though there is a dirty industrial park. But," and she leant in again, "how about the theatre district? Fancy a show tonight? Perfect nightcap after touring the town then dinner in the poshest restaurant."
Will shook his head. "I'm not one for posh. Find me a good pub and I'm right at home. But the theatre sounds brilliant, and I'm sure David would love it." He turned to his friend to find him wiping his lips with his serviette with surprising finality.
"I'm sorry," David said as he tossed the cloth on the table. "I've a bit of work on the TARDIS that I've been neglecting for too long. If you don't mind..." He stood and swept Chanra's hand up to a gallant kiss. "It was a pleasure meeting you, and thank you for showing us around."
"But -" Will began.
"No, don't let me distract you from enjoying the day together. I'll see you back at the TARDIS, Will." He loped off without another word.
Will stared after him. "Well, that was a thing."
Chanra smiled. "It's just you and me, I guess."
"I guess."

I need to read all the David and Will stories (probably in order) but I love this bit. David being covert and Will and Chanra's interactions.
"Well that was a thing" made me :D

The gift for my friend is very different - she shipped Will and David and wanted a romantic story. So, the story is after they go back to the TARDIS and they're each in their own rooms thinking about the day. David's upset about how the day went and realizes that it's because he's jealous and actually loves Will. Will, for his part, noticed that David was off all day, and, as he thinks over all the events, he realizes that David had been pushing the two of them together - but Will hadn't been interested in her, and realizes that the reason he hadn't been interested was because he was actually in love in with David. The story ends with both of them deciding, for various reasons, that the other should never know and resolving to forget it ever happened.
And I really have no idea why I just told you all this. Ah well. :)
The "That was a thing" thing was directly stolen from Good Omens - DT's character says that when Michael Sheen's character suddenly starts acting oddly and runs off. It just seemed to fit.
