Fill -Challenge 10
It was a sunny November morning at Farringham School, and Doctor Smith, the new science teacher was in the middle of only his second class of the day.
"So" he began as he scrawled on the chalkboard "In 1609, Johannes Kepler wrote that the planets in the Solar System orbit in an ellipse. This contradicts the previous-" Right at that moment, the bell rang.
"Ah, class dismissed."
As a flurry of boys and less than a handful of girls filed out of the classroom, one of them, Nyssa , stayed behind a minute.
"How was I?" Doctor Smith asked "I fear I'm coming across rather dry."
"I found it quite fascinating, Doctor." she answered.
"Nyssa, do feel free to not refer to me so formally," he said, starting to prepare his desk for the next class. "I am, after all, family."
"Sorry, Doctor-I mean, uncle" Nyssa quickly corrected herself. That was going to be hard to adjust. The Trakenite quietly reached into the pocket of her uniform. The watch was there, ticking like normal. As she began walking to her next class, she wondered how Tegan was doing.
----------
Several weeks later, Doctor Smith was having a rather terrible sleepless night. He'd had them more and more lately-and now he was having the most peculiar of dreams. He'd considered speaking to the school nurse about it, but for now he took out a pen and the journal on his nightstand. The pages were filled with the most incredible stories: metal men, gigantic lizards, vampires. There were stories of far off places. A few pages had small drawings-some were his two nieces, some had other figures he didn't recognize. All so vivid and real..but only dreams.
--------
"I have had it!" Tegan exclaimed later that afternoon. "Someone get me out of this place!" Classes had ended for the day and both girls had a bit of a break.
"Tegan," Nyssa started "we have to stay here for at least three months. The Doctor is in danger."
"I know!" the Australian cried. "But if I have to put up with one more of these stupid old professors asking me where his tea is or to sort his books, I'm going to murder him myself and save those Family things the trouble."Tegan groaned. "If I wanted all this, I could've stayed an air stewardess."
"I thought you got 'the sack' ."
"I did! But that's the point, Nyssa. I-wait a minute!" A sudden noise made both girls turn towards the window. There, outside, piercing through the night sky, were flashes of green light and shooting stars.
(A/N- So, this...happened. ;p I know I know, cliche divergence but Human Nature is my fave Who Thing and it was kind of fun! I feel like this could be expanded somehow. And sorry Miss Redfern but I couldn't think of what to do with you)

I definitely think that this could be expanded. It would certainly be radically different (and refreshing!) from the dozens of HN/FoB rewrites with either Rose or Donna as John Smith's (and then eventually the Doctor's) love interest. To make it interesting, you'd have to figure out how to make it unique to the TARDIS team you've chosen - you shouldn't just retell exactly the same story, just switching out brown hair for blond. It's easiest to keep the love interest as the reason why John doesn't want to change back, but you can't really transplant Martha's story to Nyssa or Tegan. I'd probably come up with a plotline where over the course of the three months, one of them also doesn't want to return (maybe Nyssa starts working in a bio lab to cure a disease, like she did in Terminus), leaving it to the other to run around trying to get both of them to come back.
Or you could follow something more along the lines of the novel, where the Doctor became human for a different reason (which the reader does not know) and Nyssa and Tegan are trying to keep him human because of it. Then the Family detects something about him, comes a-lookin', and Nyssa and Tegan realize he has to become the Doctor again to fight them, etc. etc.
Are you following BMG's current HN rewrite, where John Smith is a doctor and he, Martha, and Donna are at a hospital in the 90s and they have Jenny (regenerated into a young girl) with them? It's a good example of how you can really deviate from the episode's plotline to making your story interesting in its own right.

And the idea came when I was thinking about the Winter part of Circular Time ( where the Doctor has a wife) and his words about living in linear time. I may try to expand on this sooooon! One of my precious was figuring out what his relationship to Nyssa and Tegan should be. Initial ewere Nyssa being his daughter, but settled on his nieces.
Did you see the two videos Cornell wrote during the #LOCKDOWN event? With Benny and Daughter of Mine, I enjoyed them. :)

It would probably help you to figure how Nyssa's and Tegan's relationships to John Smith if you figured out what story about them you want to tell. Like, in the episode, Cornell needed to keep Martha nearby at all times so that she could protect John and plausibly walk in on him and Joan, while also have no authority and be the target of racial discrimination, so he made her a maid living at the school. In the novel, there was no imminent threat at the beginning, so John didn't need protecting, so Benny was his niece and lived in the village as an artist. See what I mean? Figure out what the story is, then assign them roles to accomplish that.
I did see the lockdown videos! They were great in general, but I didn't like the Daughter of Mine only because I've already written a story about her fate and I hate having my headcanon destroyed. :)
