I actually wrote! Not the challenge itself, mind you.
I mentioned an ancient WIP to
romanajo123 earlier this week, and I decided to pull it out and actually start working on it. There are bits where I haven't worked out what's happening, so I decided to try out Paul Cornell's advice: write an outline of the story using storytelling language (e.g. "They traveled there, but suddenly...!"), to lay out the beats of the narrative. And here it is.
A good chunk of this story is already written, but many parts aren't yet. Also, there are a couple of bits that are left in parentheses because I don't have enough specifics about what's in those scenes to consider their lines done. I'll be working on those this weekend.
(Note that all of the named people are real people who worked on "The Waters of Mars". They're not original characters, and most of them aren't important to the story except for Russell.)
The Doctor arrives in Upper Boat, determined to tour David’s universe, and strides off to go observe the making of this TV programme about his life. However, he doesn’t realize that his perception filter doesn’t work.
David is in rehearsal for WoM and psychically detects that the Doctor has arrived, but he doesn’t know where and he’s confident that the perception filter will hide the Doctor from the rest of the world. He heads off to the props room to meet up with Paul to work on a prop he has to wear.
However, when the Doctor enters the reception area of the studio, he’s mobbed by fans and he realizes the perception filter doesn’t work. As he’s trying to deal with people the way he thinks David would, the receptionist extracts him and brings him into the facility.
As the Doctor is trying to find a way to get out, he meets up with Lindsay (costumer) who tells him that Russell is looking for him and that he needs to get to makeup early.
The Doctor finally finds an empty office to stop and think for a bit, but the occupant, a production assistant eventually comes back and he has to head out. He needs to either find an exit or find David.
Meanwhile, David comes out of the props room…
(My notes from the doc, which is what I need to work out: Seems that here, David gets the clue that the Doctor is actually here in Llandaff. He rushes off to try to find him. The Doctor gets stopped by someone and then next scene starts. It really seems like there needs to be more shenanigans before the two meet up. Perhaps David gets the clue and goes off searching; the Doctor gets into another scrape and extricates himself; David encounters someone who the Doctor encountered before and has an uncomfortable discussion there [probably Lindsay the costume designer]; then we come to the next scene.)
The Doctor has been waylaid by yet another person, who wants to discuss with him (David) some work narrating a documentary. While they’re talking, he spots David, who waves him to follow.
The two end up in a storage room and David yells at the Doctor for not staying in the DW universe like he promised, and the Doctor shows him that the perception filter doesn’t work.
Suddenly, the door opens and Chris walks in. He’s stunned at the twins standing in front of him, and the Doctor tries to sleep him but fails, and David has to do it.
They figure out that the humans in this universe work on a different psychic wavelength. David can operate naturally on both, but the perception filter can’t, not without recalibration.
They’re too deep in the studio for the Doctor to exit and return to the TARDIS, especially because David really need to get back to work - he needs to get to makeup and costuming, and then go to the location for the night filming - and they shouldn’t be both be running around. The plan: The Doctor waits for five minutes in the storage room while David goes to the TARDIS and recalibrates the perception filter (should not take him too long). The Doctor seeks the closest refuge, David’s trailer, and hides there until David returns.
(More notes: David sneaks through the studio, gets held up, finally makes it outside, gets to the TARDIS, recalibrates the perception filter, puts it on, and heads back to the studio.)
The Doctor is waiting in the trailer when Russell barges in and asks for his opinion on which ending they should use. Lots of internal angst, and eventually Russell comes to the conclusion that the suicide is more true to the story.
Then the trailer driver comes to move the trailer to the night filming. The Doctor has no choice but to stay in the trailer and change into the blue suit.
Back at the studio, David sees someone he needs to talk to and takes off the perception filter, but the makeup person catches him at that point and drags him off. Since he’s not in costume, he’s also dragged off there. Once he’s finally done, he finds that the trailer is gone, and has to find a way to the filming site
At the filming site, the Doctor delays as long as he can, but eventually, he has to go out and play himself on camera.
(Idea: Don’t actually show the scene. The previous scene should end on him glancing at the script, seeing one of the worst, most emo lines, then resolving to play it as he remembers it.)
(When the Doctor returns to the trailer, David is there. Denouement.)
