This is the closest I'm ever going to get to writing something epistolary. :) I tried to think of a better idea, but this was all I came up with.

Sorry in advance for formatting issues. You can't really format a formal letter in the limited HTML Dreamwidth provides, so the indented bits are the return address and signature, which should be located to the right of center.

Today, you’re going to do research, because research is a part of writing.

Select an outdoor public place you’ve never been to before, specifically a building or an area that you can approach and enter by walking. Some ideas: the Louvre, a temple in Japan, a public park in San Francisco, Soho, the front gates of Disneyland.

Go to Google Maps and find the place. For a few minutes, study the place in map view and satellite view, and street view if it’s available. Get a good sense of the layout, how far apart things are, how tall things are, where entrances and exits are (if applicable), the terrain, which way is uphill/downhill, etc. Try to picture what it would be like to visit that place.

Now, choose a character (original or DW or anything else), think of a reason that person would be in that place, then write two paragraphs (or more) of that person walking into that place. Try to focus on the actual entry (movement, sights, sounds) and the environment, and less on how they feel at the moment.

Ideas: How do they approach the place? What do they see? Is it easy to get in, do they have to buy a ticket, or are they stopped from entering? Are there other people around?

(I am unsure if this explicitly counts as "epistolary" if it's Instant Messaging; but wanted to try experimenting. Also sorry if I get the Doctor and Charley wrong)

WELCOME TO THE CAFE! YOU ARE SIGNED INTO THE NETWORK

MsPollard12: Doctor when you suggested we visit a cafe, I was rather looking forward to something more...
Doctor8: Old-fashioned?
MsPollard12: Luxorious. Like the cafe I used to visit when we would visit Cannes. Such exquisite pastries. This place is..coffee and a lot of computer whatsits.
Doctor8: It's a cybercafe, Charley. Meant to resemble Earth at the dawn of the millennium.  In less than a century from your time, most households throughout the world will own one of these.
MsPollard12: It sounds absolutely boring. What's the point of communicating like this?
Doctor8: And someone had to have said that about wireless and telephones as well.
(a *ping* sound effect and on-screen text reading YOUR ORDER IS READY ENJOY)
MsPollard12: Rather chirpy isn't it?
Doctor8: Oh! Our coffees are ready :)
MsPollard12: ...Doctor you're next to me. I can see you smile. Did you really have to type it into this?
Doctor8: It's called an emoticon! You can use them too
MsPollard12: :) ;) :(  Gosh, there's so many of them..
Doctor8: This tea tastes...rather odd.  How is yours?
MsPollard12: Actually, it's quite good.  I'm getting a bit more. Do you want any?
Doctor8: No, but I will have one of those scones :)
MsPollard12: But Doctor I wanted that---ooh! :/

[ from a computer near the back of the cafe- a new user signs in]

MMagisterObey- oh my dear Doctor, enjoy your tea- it may be your last..
