(Double duty since it's for a class discussion. My most recent - as in the one I just finished! - lesson was on Bringing your Story to Life. Things like Show Don't Tell, Drama vs. Melodrama, and using transitions or a cliffhanger. I wanted to try the first one so here is a sentence I thought of and what I did to it ;P )
A: Mandy was nervous about giving her book report.
B: Mandy's mouth felt like it was dry as sandpaper. She'd worked for three days on this report- and by now could quote just about everything in Jane Eyre if she had to. So now why was this so hard? Playing with her pen, Mandy sat on pins and needles as her friend finished his report. While everyone else applauded , she wondered if now might be one of those rare moments where the fire alarm blared and everyone had to leave immediately or the bell would ring early. Unfortunately , it wasn't meant to be that day. Taking a few breaths, Mandy, notecards in hand, stood up to begin her report...
