They say that fanfiction is just trash, that it can't be great literature... but they're wrong. One modern example of fanfiction of high standing is "West Side Story", which is a modern retelling of "Romeo and Juliet": instead of the Montague and Capulet families, you have the Jets and Sharks gangs, and two people, one from each gang, fall in love.
Today's challenge is to write your own retelling. Choose some known work - a book, a TV show episode, a movie, whatever - and reimagine it in a different setting with your own characters. (You can transform it from one IP to another, say, retell "Rascals" from ST:TNG in Friends. (Okay, so I've never seen Friends, but it was the first large-ensemble show I could think of.)) Of course, you're not going to write the entire thing in ten minutes, so just write a scene of your retelling.
