Omg three in a row!
The last story I posted for my David AU ended in the middle of an argument. I haven't yet come up with the next story to resolve the argument, but I figured I could write an apology scene now, right in the editor.
David glared at him, the subtle glow in his eyes brightening for a moment before it suddenly winked out. He glanced at the pavement in confusion, then clapped a hand to his mouth. "Oh, that's what you were saying. That's what you meant. And I was too proud, too pig-headed to... Argh!" He pounded his head with his palm a few times.
Clenching his fists, he sucked in a deep breath and let it go gently. He turned to Will, opened his mouth as if to speak, then clamped it shut again as he whirled away. "I can't say it. Why can't I say it? I've said it before, loads of times. Why can't I say it now?"
Will held up a hand to stop him. "It's okay, mate. You don't have to."
David gazed at him with a sardonic smile. "Oh yes, I do. I can feel it, in here." He prodded his chest, the thumps on his breastbone audible. "The pride, burning me up, choking me. Time Lords are never wrong, they don't make mistakes, and they certainly don't admit it. I can't do that. I can't be that. I've got to beat it, here, now, or I never will."
Closing his eyes, he bit his lip, and his shoulders loosened as he centered himself. His eyes popped open. "Will." He stepped forward and clasped his hands together in supplication. "You were right, all this time, from back at the cottage. What you said, how poorly I behaved, you were spot on, and I couldn't hear it, not from you, not from anybody. And I punished you for that, and still you kept on me. That's what you do, isn't it? Keep me from losing myself. Thank you, my friend." He exhaled heavily. "And I'm sorry, for how I've treated you, for all of this. I lashed out at you because I couldn't face it in myself."
Will shook his head. "It's all right, mate. It's fine. It's just human nature."
David frowned. "You -?"
Will nodded. "Yes. I mean that. Pride isn't unique to Time Lords, you know. Neither is stubbornness." He jerked his head back toward the ship's bridge. "Come on, let's get back to them."
