I've actually been working on a story, so this doesn't fill the actual challenge, but I thought I'd share a couple of paragraphs. This is the Blue Rain AU. Jon is taking Donna somewhere as a surprise and they've just arrived. A later part of the story would fit well with the "teaching someone something" challenge last week but I haven't gotten there yet. This snippet is missing some description.

Donna found herself standing in a wide car park staring at a large building, as wide and squat as a supermarket but without a herd of shopping trolleys in front. Above the tinted glass entryway, a large sign stylised in a 1950s American neon diner motif proclaimed the establishment to be “Strike!” She turned to him and grinned, half in excitement and half in disbelief. “Tenpin bowling? You’re taking us tenpin bowling?”

He shrugged, scratching at the back of his neck. “It’s what he chose.”

“But you told me you’ve never bowled before, back when Mum’s club invited us for the bowling party. No fun in this for you.”

“Well, that would’ve been making a fool of myself in front of all of your Mum’s friends. This is just Dave and his girlfriend.” He shut the car door and secured it. “And I’m not going to renege on my promise just to save myself a bit of embarrassment.”

Donna took his outstretched hand and they strolled toward the entrance. “Gramps appreciates your sacrifice.”

“I could have machined the part myself but it was a bit tricky and Dave’s just better at it. His job and all. Best I stick to the designing and let the expert do the building. It’s been brill upgrading that telescope piece by piece. It’s now better than models costing five times as much. Better optics, too.”

“My favourite bit’s the cup holder.”

“I’ve told you, it’s not a cup holder. It’s meant to stabilise the tripod.”

“But the hole in the center -”

“I know,” he groaned. “Perfect for tea. And to be honest, the added weight’s even better for stability.” He gestured at the bowling alley with his free hand. “But all in all, this is a small payment for getting that thing made right.”

Donna rubbed her hands together eagerly. “No complaint from me! I love a good night at the lanes.”
