Here's an exercise in walking in someone else's shoes for a while. Write a familiar scene - a location you know well, or a small bit of a favorite TV show or movie - from the point of view of someone who has little or no context for understanding what's happening.

As an example, a dog watching two people eating dinner and talking wouldn't understand the concepts of plates and eating utensils, or that the sounds coming out of their mouths meant anything, and it probably would be more focused on trying to get some of the food than anything else. On the other hand, it can probably discern emotions from the sounds and expressions.

Another idea is an alien watching a human do something, or vice versa - the more alien the better. Would an insectoid being really understand how dangerous a knife is to a fleshy human? Would a human understand why the insectoid alien is so afraid of a hammer?

A third idea is a different culture, but this would take some research and understanding if you're not already well-versed in both cultures involved.
