tenminutesaday ( I'm a day early, I know. But I felt... kind of inspired. So have 8 and River. This has not been edited)
From her seat at the long table, she can see him. Oh... it's this one. She's seen him before- at least once. He lives such a long time in this face. His voice is softer now; and there's less of the boyish glee and excitement as the Pretty Boy and the Geography Teacher. But he's still the Doctor.
River... or Ensign Malone, as she's been for the last two weeks leans in a little closer. She can make out pieces of his tirade with the General. But what gets to her the most is his face. That look- like someone who's spent years awake , he'd drop off any minute if he wasn't careful. And there's something more... that's harder to decipher. It's a different kind of tired. She shouldn't go over there. But she has to do something.
Straightening her red official cap on top of her bouncy curls, she walks over to him and opens her canteen. It's not as good as tea back on Earth, but as she pours it out, River smiles a little to herself. Now if she remembered right, he liked it with milk and sugar.
So it begins. She introduces herself and they talk for what feels like hours. And for a split second, she thinks she sees the corners of his mouth turn up to form a small smile.
An alarm sounds, meaning their little meeting is going to have to be cut short. But that is what it is, especially when the Doctor's involved. She's about to get up and return to her position with the rest of the ship's crew, when suddenly.
"Pleasure to meet you, ensign Malone. When will I see you again?"
Blowing a quick kiss and grabbing the canteen, her only answer is "Spoilers, sweetie!"
And maybe they'll get to chat longer... of he'll bring the tea.
