This is something that I've played around with, though not seriously. It's set after the main events in my origfic, and honestly, it's not likely to work in a real story, but it's fun to think about.

In my orig fic, the main characters are Kit, the human who discovers she can do magic easily and well; Alex, the keror (looks kind of like a canine-ish winged demon); and Gray, the otan (looks like a dragonborn without all the pointy bits). The creatures from the other world can transform to become human, so Alex is from the other world and is trying to fit in here, while Gray was brought up as human here and only recently discovered that he's not actually human.

The concept of this bit is that sometime after the main story, a rival mage needs to get rid of the two men, so they wipe the memory of the character and incarcerate him. It's not an actual prison, but a facility where the ultra-rich can pay to make someone they want to get rid of disappear rather than having them killed outright. The people live in this secret underground facility, where they get everything they need to live, but can't escape and have no contact with the outside world.

So, the character wakes up here, with no memory of who he is, where he is, or why he's here. And I'm calling him "the character" because if he doesn't know who he is, you shouldn't either. :)

Take a character - either original or a fandom character - and imagine them sometime in the future, when they're no longer doing the things they used to do, or perhaps living in a very different location (different town, country, planet). Ideas are a companion who's no longer traveling with the Doctor, or someone who has retired from their career, or even a character that was young and single in canon but now has a family of five, or is even a grandparent now.

Now, write a few paragraphs of that character encountering something that reminds them of 'now': the companion sees the Doctor (or an alien invasion!), the retiree has a chance meeting with an old co-worker, the grandparent goes to a college reunion.

For the word "Imbroglio" at vocab_drabbles.  ( Feedback welcome)

Donna frowned,  this was turning out to not be her day.   First, she was stuck dressed like a wench,  then they'd landed in ten feet of mud, now the TARDIS seemed to be messing with her; moving the ladies' where she couldn't find it.

About the third try,  Donna stumbled upon a particular room she hadn't seen before.  The walls were the same, but it was covered from floor to ceiling in... what even was all this?  Stepping inside, Donna curiously began to sift through the various junk,  amazed at all this... stuff.  Where had he gotten a recorder? Or a tattered cape? Or... wait! Was that a piece of celery? Throwing the wilted thing down,  Donna was this close to resuming her quest for the loo when an all too familiar voice called her.

"Donna! There you are! Got something to show you, I think you'll-"

"Save it ,  sunshine." Donna cut him off.  " What is all this? Your rubbish room? Ever thought about cleaning this out?"

"Oh it's been ages since I've been in here!" The Doctor said fondly,  peering around the room. " Bit of a mess,  but full of a lot of memories."  He picked up a purple pill-box hat, then a cat badge.

"So it's organized chaos? Had a mate, Derek , once who was like that. Always in the head teacher's office for losing something."

Putting the badge down,  the Doctor nodded.

Clara was apparently mad at him again.  When she suggested he take a bit to cool off ,  he found it again- the junk room.  When was the last time he'd been in here? It got more disorganized,  but he liked it.
