It counts as meeting for the first time if you were an infant when they last saw you, right? This one I fought and wrote around and a lot of things didn't feel right until we came here. I'm still trying to figure out Janef, she is so minor in the first book and the second is very much about Kallon. This third child of Teigan and Kayrin has felt a bit like a third wheel for the decade plus I've been working on these stories. I'm starting to figure her out, I think. She's 18 here, she was 2 when they left Geteilpohth.
Janef sat perched on the bank of the Milash river where Sray had crossed two days ago. Sray should be back any time now and Janef wanted to be the first to know. Around lunch time Yurrein Nelendor appeared with a plate of food.
"How long does it take to get there?" He asked as he sat beside her and offered the plate.
"Thanks, Mr. Nelendor." She took the offered plate and set it on her lap. "I don't know. I was a baby when we left here." She picked at the food. "This place is as foreign to me as it is to you."
"You can call me Yurrein if you wish. Your family is practically part of The Family so far as I'm concerned."
"Thanks. I'm sure Sray has told you herself already, but I appreciate what you did for Kallon."
He nodded. "I wish it had gone better for him, but The Family can be a bit," he paused to consider the right word, "overwhelming."
"It still helped. He needed somewhere to go and you gave him that. Thank you."
"It was the least we could do after what you all did for us," he said sincerely, "even if you didn't know it at the time."
Janef suddenly straightened. "They're coming back."
"They?" Yurrein questioned, trying to see what Janef was focused on. "More than one?"
Janef pushed the plate back at him as she jumped up and slid down the bank. She paused at the water's edge, looked up and down it's length and jumped in, half wading half swimming across the waist-deep water, drifting a ways downstream with the current. She paused long enough on the far side to heat her clothes dry.
Yurrein stared after her from the opposite bank, the barely touched plate of food awkward in his hands.
Janef scurried up the far bank and angled off towards where she sensed them approaching. "Sray!" She called out when she spotted them. Sray was leading her mule walking with another person. Janef stopped. The Klamon woman was in her half form and she looked remarkably like Sray, just a little shorter. Janef found herself frozen in place, too shocked to move further.
Sray waved and they continued their careful approach through the rocky terrain. When Sray and the other woman got closer Sray put her hand on the other's shoulder. "Janef, this is our aunt, Rothan Belrohth Kishur."
Janef brought her hands to her face and let out a muffled squeak. "Aunt Rothan! I-I-O!" She couldn't find the words and didn't know what to do with herself. She wanted to just burst forward but didn't know if she should.
Rothan smiled broadly and spread her arms wide. Janef needed no more encouragement and sprung forward, embracing her aunt whom she only knew through stories. Her words finally bubbled over. "I can't believe you're here! I finally get to meet you! I never thought I would get to and now we're here and you're here and I just wish-the only thing-wish Kallon were here and-O Rothan, I'm sorry." Janef pulled back and wiped her eyes. She hadn't expected tears, but the joy of finally getting to meet one of her long lost relatives was thrown in sharp relief against her brother and parents' absence.
Rothan placed her hands gently on Janef's cheeks, wiping the tears with her thumbs and pressed her forehead against Janef's. "No apologies needed, Janef." Rothan said, her own voice rough around the edges. "Now let me see you. You were just the smallest thing when you left." Rothan pulled back, her pale lavender eyes searching every feature. "I see both of them in you, Janef. I regret not being able to see you grow, but it brings me joy to have you here now."
Rothan icon for obvious reasons.
