He struggled for every step forward, planting each foot firmly before even thinking to move the next. One fist clamped the collar of his coat closed while the other shielded his nose and mouth from the constant spray of dirt and pebbles. A sheet of newsprint splatted across his chest and embraced him like an amorous manta ray before shredding to pieces. Grasping a signpost to keep him from tumbling backwards, he paused and cracked an eye open to gauge his progress. A warm haven lay beyond two more blocks of battle against an invisible enemy.
