The campus, however, hadn’t impressed upon Peri the full weight of its grandeur until she entered the famed Harvard Yard. Back at Cal State, she would have called this the quad, but she couldn’t bring herself to give this place such a banal name. Thick leafy trees shaded the wide green lawn crisscrossed by walkways, such that though the square wasn’t more than a tenth of a mile across, she couldn’t see the opposite side through the foliage. Great buildings of red brick ringed the square, watching the students as they had for hundreds of years.

Most daunting, however, was her destination, the university library. A wide rise of steps led to entry doors dwarfed by twelve thick Corinthian columns, shining white under the gray Boston sky. The dark windows stared down at her, daring the girl from a (gasp!) state school to attempt entry into the finest library in the country. Peri bit her lip. She’d faced down maniacs on far-flung alien planets with no problem; why was this so frightening?

Nope, still a companion, though it really doesn't matter either way. I just went to Tardis Wiki to see what college Peri had been attending when she met the Doctor, and it said Calfornia State. Which is weird, because most people who grow up on the East Coast don't bother going to the West Coast for school and vice versa, but hey, I make stupid mistakes like that about British stuff, so I shouldn't be surprised Brits do the same thing for American stuff. (I had people point out that my AU character Jon, as a Londoner, would not have considered going to the US for school - he would have gone to Cambridge. I had to reply that perhaps that's true, if he was just going to uni without a purpose, but he had a particular career in mind, and MIT was the best school for that in the whole world.)

I hadn’t given it much thought- just assumed she moved to California at some point. I do wonder. If the East Coast part of Peri was added to explain Nicola’s changing accent.

Brit-picking can be helpful! But your reasons for Jon going to MIT make sense.

I think she mentioned she was from Baltimore in the TV show, but I'm not sure. But I do think that was pretty early on. The Cal State was from a book or something.


While Nicola's accent wasn't perfect, it never bothered me at all. I've found it funny that people criticize her for it, because there was that one audio where Six and Peri switched bodies for a while, and man, Colin's American accent is far worse. :D (And if you really want a laugh, search YouTube for "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer".)
