Gray concentrated hard on the incoming strikes, blocking them with sure parries. He backed up a step when he had to, and though space wasn't an issue in the wide meadow, he slowly circled his opponent around to keep him in the clear. He managed to poke or slash at him two or three times, but couldn't connect.
Eglis sneered like a wolf cornering its prey, sure of its dinner. "Someone's been teaching you to fight, and you've learnt well, but not well enough." His two quick thrusts and slash met hard metal. "You can't hope to defeat me."
"I know. I'm just doing what I need to do."
Eglis' next hard strike came perilously close to Gray's face. "And what's that?"
"Stall."
"What?"
The sun flashed off red-gold fur as Alex dropped on Eglis from above, the expert otan hunter knocking the sword from his hands and immobilising his limbs as they fell to the grass. As his jaws closed around his throat, Gray commanded, "No, Alex, no!"
His fangs lightly resting on the pale scales, ready to sink, Alex growled a question.
"We still need him." Gray sheathed his weapon. "You can kill him later."
(As written, this scene actually cannot happen. I just made Eglis up a moment ago, and Gray doesn't meet any otan until long after Alex loses his wings. However, I really like the idea of Gray having an enemy and so far he doesn't have any actual character development, so maybe I need to work this into the story.)
