“Yes, that one,” the Doctor remarked as Romana removed the roundel, revealing the dark compartment behind it.

“Very good.” She peered into it, then reached a hand in to start moving the stored components around. “I must say, Doctor, that over the past few cycles that we have worked together, I have come to find your TARDIS to be rather charming. She certainly makes up for her deficiencies in capabilities with a certain amount of, shall we say, personality.”

The Doctor flopped back on the floor and pushed himself under the console. “Quite the opposite with Time Lords.”

“If you would allow me, however, I could improve her stability quite a bit with…” She paused. “Hullo, what is this?”

The Doctor rolled back out to find her holding up a device made of metal bands forming a half-dome, with cables sprouting from the top though unconnected to anything. “That is a plinnaren, a musical instrument from Garas IX. You tuck the long bit into your armpit, then lick the bit on top -”

“No,” Romana declared. “I know what this is. This is a chameleon arch.”

“A camilan ark?” He didn’t bother to sit up, flicking a hand at her to dismiss her claim. “Oh yes. That was a birthday present. From Victoria, or perhaps Jamie. I wondered where it got to.”

She frowned at the Doctor. “Why do you have one of these?”

“I just told you, it -”

“It is a chameleon arch, Doctor.” She strode over and knelt to hold it right over his nose. “These were not standard in new TARDISes until the Type 87s, and even then, only in deep exploration crafts. And this one looks hand-built. It is missing the manufacturing stamp from the laboratories in Arcadia.”

The Doctor took the contraption from her. “Ah! A chameleon arch. Yes. I rather misheard you.”

“You weren’t actually thinking of using it?” Her wrinkled nose betrayed her opinion of that action.

“Oh, no, no, not at all.” He pushed himself back under the console. “I acquired it from Elardinel. I’m sure you don’t know him. Fresh out of the Academy, was going on and on about ‘finding out how the others lived’ and all that rot. So I relieved him of the device, to prevent such a colossal mistake.”

“Excellent.” Romana sprang to her feet and walked toward the door leading to the TARDIS interior, holding the arch by the cable like it was a dead rat. “I shall put this into the recycler. A bit of spring cleaning.”

“Yes. ‘Excellent’,” the Doctor murmured once she was gone.
