I am totally writing this off the cuff, in the Dreamwidth editor, no post-editing. Ten minutes (well, more like 30) FTW!
(This scene is a few days after the last David and Will story I posted. The last scene of that had Will pointing out that David had handled things badly and David taking offense.)
Will leant back, trying to appear relaxed and resigned though his heart thumped against his ribcage. "You're the one who implied you'd dump me back home first chance you got, mate. If you're going to do it, then do it. Don't pretend it's all just business as usual, cos we both know it's not."
The corner of David's mouth twitched into a sneer before he could school his expression back to neutral. "I tried. I thought you'd think better of your words and would prefer that it all had never happened, so I said nothing more. Apparently, I was wrong."
"Yes. You were." Will tapped the table. "I regret none of my words to you, and I stand by everyone one of them."
"Oh." David swept an arm to indicate the TARDIS around him. "Then none of this means anything to you? You'd give up all of time and space in favor of dictating how I perform my job?"
Will's jaw dropped, and he jumped to his feet. "Is that what this has been about? You invited me to travel with you as a favor, like you're... you're letting your hamster out of the cage every so often? I thought you asked me because we were mates."
The muscles of his jaw twitching as he ground his teeth, David crossed his arms and sucked in his breath. " I thought we were mates, too. But a mate doesn't tell you you're doing everything wrong, especially when he has no comprehension of what you're doing or why."
Will shook his head, smiling sadly. "No, mate, you're wrong again." David's eyes hardened, but Will didn't allow him to interrupt. "A mate is the only person who'll tell you you're wrong, because they care about you. Anyone else'll just walk away and let you keep digging yourself deeper."
He stepped toward his friend, close enough to hold his attention but not enough to be aggressive. "Think about it, mate. Think about every little thing that happened in that house. Do you really think that you did everything right? If you do, then you've lost that humanity you've been trying so hard to hold onto."
He bit his lip. "But I don't think so. I'm sure you don't agree with everything I said, but you know that I got some of it right. There's always room for improvement, even for you. I just think your other half doesn't want to admit it. It stings too much. And I think that's why you keep me around, because I'm not afraid to point it out. I'm useless a lot of the time, but that's one thing I've always done for you."
Will saluted with two fingers then twirled on his heel and strode out, leaving David staring after him, stroking his jaw as he thought.
